The truck of the month goes to Sarah Branston and her slick 98 super cab!

1998 Ford F-150 XLT 4x4

4.6L

93k on motor and tranny

184k on body

Ha, what hasn't been to this truck? I've got a folder of AutoZone receipts that would make Trump cringe if he added them all up!

Everything is still pretty stock on the truck as far as the motor and transmission.

Here soon I'll be getting new headers, would like to take the cats off and re-do the exhaust.

Future plans have a 6" lift and 38's involved.

The whole truck is painted in matte black plastidip (which will need to be done again here in the near future) except the trim and bumpers which are painted in bedliner. I just repainted the badges in Teal plastidip but I need to paint the letters in black to break it up a bit.

Has anyone had real excessive negative camber issues with their trucks

Has anyone had real excessive negative camber issues with their trucks? When I got the truck, someone along the way installed a leveling kit on the front and I don't think they ever adjusted the eccentrics. I recently replaced the upper and lower control arms and the the camber is real aggressive in the front with the eccentrics out as far as possible I think. Went to get it aligned at Ntb and they basically refused to do it. Saying they couldn't help. Was curious to see what you all did to correct it if you've had that problem. If all else fails, I'll probably pull the leveling pucks out of the front.

cowl induction hoods. anyone running one. thoughts pros cons

cowl induction hoods? anyone running one.. thoughts, pros/ cons?

NOT the cobra R types (ram air).. just the raised cowl 2" + type ..

looking for heat release in sw florida...

the theory is.. if raised and open in the rear, then heat can escape ,even at idle because cooling fan brings cool air in through radiator.. and would force heat to escape through cowl opening at the back of hood..

We also have rain in sw florida.. so.. theory the is, that rain water can, and will , enter through same opening and wet engine bay and components ...

(puhaps a custom "rain lip" can be intalled?)

So! Both upper ball joints were totally gone. So I ordered both moog replacement upper control arms. Also ordered camber caster adjustment bolts for both sides. I put the arms on last night, but put factory bolts and adjuster bolts back in. " I marked them before I loosened anything. Took the truck to get an alignment this morning and explain that I had the adjusters. About an hour later they call an tell me that they wouldn't install the adjusters that I bought, I would have to buy some from them, and then they tell me I have a driver's side tie rod that was seized up. And would also need replacing before I could get an alignment. So I told them to take it off the rack an pull it out, I'd come get it. Mainly because they refused to install a part that I had already paid for.

So my 97 with the 4.6l finally died once today. I'd been driving it around recently and noticed when I come to a complete stop it will idle down sometimes into the 450 to 500 range and then bounce back up. No other problems with it that I'm noticing. Take off is fine and It'll start up and drive around just fine. It's just when I come to a complete stop it will idle way down and sometimes die. Any help on what I should check first would be great. It's received new spark plugs, wires, and both new coils on it recently. It also idles just fine in park. Thanks I appreciate it

Hey guys running out of ideas on what is wrong with my 02 eddie Bauer 4

Hey guys running out of ideas on what is wrong with my 02 eddie Bauer 4.6 l. Have checked coils and plugs, ended up replacing plugs and new boots and springs. Cleaned the tb, and the egr ports out and replaced the gaskets I took off to do the job. Replaced egr valve, dpfe sensor, replaced tps. And also replaced the IAC valve and the little hose and valve that goes from the left head to the back of the Tb case. As well as cleaned the maf and ran a injector cleaner through it. And tested for vacuum leaks, and have had my truck in 3 shops over the last year and a half and no one can figure out why the idle is jumping still.... I am stumped and have been stressed and scared to drive the vehicle out of town for over a year. The car was getting 6 mpgs at one point but now is getting around 11.5 which I know is still less than it should. Anyone know what else could be wrong? Really don't wanna spend much more money into it if possible i have put 3 grand into trying to figure it out. It currently has around 155,000 miles on it. And it only has issues on startup in which it revs up to 1500-2200 rpm and stays there for a second then jumps down real fast fluctuates a little then will jump, or stop between 600-800 rpm. Also does it when at a stop it seems to almost backfire or something when slowing down it almost sticks at a high rpm for a second feels like backfires but doesn't make a loud noise although I can feel when it does this in my brakes, then after that the rpm will drop fast and will sometimes cause the car to stop super quickly like it grabs like crazy out of nowhere and idle will jump unless I put the car in park and rev it up then put it back in drive. Sorry I know this is confusing, any ideas what's wrong thanks?

OK, does someone that is a little more knowledgeable about these trucks answer me this....

Before I buy it, will the 4.2L out of a 2006 fit into my 2004 Heritage without any mods. I found a really low mileage totaled truck, good price on the motor. I can buy the motor with all of the accessories still on it. I'm hoping will be one of those drop it in, hook it up, and fire it up.

What are the possibilities of that being the case??

            Thanks....

(Pic for attention, this is a pic of a 2006 4.2L motor, but not THE pic of the actual motor)

              Just curious....

I know the 4.2L in the F150 is basically a stroker version of the 3.8L.

              1) Is there away to increase the stroke the motor any more?

              2) What is the most you can bore the pistons over, and what did it change the displacement to?

I saw somewhere in an older forum that a guy turned his 4.2L into a 4.5L. I'm curious how he did it, because there wasn't much explanation on how?

If anyone knows, I would be interested to know how it was done....

I'm debating on whether I'm going to attwmpt the build myself.

              Thanks.

For the past few weeks, every morning, when I start the truck, it smokes... not your normal condensation... it's also got a strange smell to it ... not oil, not gas, not tranny, not brake fluid...

It ONLY does this in the morning after it's been sitting all night. During the day, it sits at work from 8am-5pm and it doesn't do it!

                NO POWER LOSS

                NO WATER IN THE OIL

                SMOKING STOPS AFTER 20 seconds

There is a drawing of "something" as soon as it starts

checked fluids a few times every day, checked vacuum hose for potential brake fluid, checked for water in oil...

Truck has a few codes it's pulling like random cylinder misfire, gas tank running lean, o2 sensor...

It's got a rough idle when at a stop...

Okay got a question for you guys. I recently bought a 2003 F150 extend cab FX4 4x4 with a 5.4 it has 154k miles on. I live in Iowa so of course it's rusty. Now for my question when I first start it up cold and drive it as it warms up the truck throws no heat, the temp gauge goes up to normal range for a few miles then starts to climb up to nearly the hot range. If I stop and shut it off for 30 seconds maybe a little bit more then restart the temp gauge goes right back down and it throws hot heat. My mechanic recently replaced the thermostat and vacuum filled the coolant back. I drove it home today and it acts up every time you drive it now before the thermostat change it was only acted up the first time you drove it for the day and never did it again. What's my problem? Pic for attention

so.. does anyone here have any experience with buying a used roundnose that the previous owner had a "tune" either installed, or left it in performance mode from a plugnplay programmer?

Do you have to have daeler reflash the ecu, in order to install a new programer, or better yet, just to use scan tool properly ,and initiate koeo/koer tests?

My scan tool shows p1001 code when test are initiated.. and ultimately.. incompleted.

currently getting 10mpg and high performance charictoristics from an 03 f150 super crew 5.4, lifted , modded, cat back open exhaust.

by these clues, I assume it has a "tune" installed , or left in performance mode when previous owner traded it in, and took the programmer with them (or dealer took it)

                      OK, need some help.

I am trying to plan a project and see if it's feasible....

I have seen several 4.2l F150 with the Eaton M112 setup similar to the lightning on the web and video clips on YouTube.

I can see where there is an adapter with a pulley on the crank, idler pully, and tensioner. But, I can't find a kit or even a parts list of individual components to make it work. Has anyone here actually done it? And are you willing to share your parts list so I price the components out?

                      Any help would be awesome.

Always open to advice and suggestions as well.

                        Ok I got a question

I rinsed out my heater core and got the passenger side of the engine wet and now I got a miss when idling at a stop light. I thought it would go away when it dried out but it's been 2 weeks. It will shake bad and when I give it gas it goes away. Sometimes it takes a few seconds or if I wait long enough it stops on its own. The engine has not shut off yet. There is no codes and the check engine light is not on. I have a 97 4.6 with 125,000 miles. I don't know if the wires were every replaced or the coil packs. I changed the plugs out over the summer. It always had a miss every once in a while but now it's a lot worse after it got wet. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks. OOS

Just cleaned my egr ports out, and replaced my TB gaskets and still have a occasional erratic idle so bad it's like the car is bucking when I do. Its not all the time mainly at lights and in drive thru when are is warmed up. Also idles high on startup and seems to run around 1000 rpm until you stop then it drops to 600 and goes back and forth from 600-1000 or so. Have replaced the IAC valve, coil packs , spark plugs the PCv and hose, and have cleaned the maf. Smoked it couldn't find any vac leaks other than TB gasket which is replaced. Also replaced dpfe sensor to a motor craft and the egr valve is new as well. Could it be the tps sensor? I have a credit at AutoZone and if this might be it I can replace it. It's not throwing any codes btw thanks. 02 expedition 4.6l

I got a question I might have ask before but anyway. When I'm driving around town every few long red lights the truck will start to shake like it wants to shut off but didn't. I will rev the engine and it will go away. Most of the time you can't even feel the engine running. It is a 97 4.6 4x4 scab with 125,000 miles. When I got it last year it fine it only started this over the summer. What I did so far was

                          Cleaned the mass airflow sensor

                          Cleaned the throdle body

                          Cleaned the EGR valve

Cleaned the air idle control valve

Put in new plugs (Denso's Platinum TT)

Changed out to a hi flow air filter

                          Gotts mod

                          Replaced tons of vac lines

I also have been noticing a strange sound when I shut it off. It takes I few seconds and you can hear a whining sound like air excaping I will try to get a video up later. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks

I have come to the conclusion the shop I took it.too didnt remove the manifold.to.clean it out so that may still be the reason my idle is erratic and I am getting.the.code.still. I know this bexause there is no way they could of removed the manifold and.cleaned the ports out.since they would of had to remove the hose on the top rear of.the. Intake manifold that goes to.the evap part by the brake booster and it would brake due to.being so old and.brittle. I am going to have to replace this hose when I go.to do.this job, what is the name, part number, or the evap part by the brake.booster.this hose connects to so I can see if anywhere has it.locally before I tear it apart?

I had been using reg 87, non-detergent, from Brookshires grocery store pumps. It's a high volume station so I know the fuel is fairly fresh. I was getting about 12mpg on average....

On a whim I decided to start using Valero reg 87, detergent, and have been getting almost 16mpg on average.

Anyone else notice better mpg just by changing fuel brands? The difference in cost is $2.04 vs $2.09 /gal. It seems to me to be worth the extra nickel?

                              Thanks.

This week's truck of the month goes to Jake F Fisher and his lifted 2004 heritage!

it's a 2004 heritage 4.2 2wd. He has owned it about 3 yrs now and has added rhino lined rockers, and nerf bars. It has 295 75 bfg all terrains on eagle alloy wheels. Exhaust is dumped after cab and has cai. Has a 4 inch procomp lift, with 3 inch blocks in rear. Also added the add-a-leaf to rear to balance it out some. He plans on giving it to his daughter when she gets old enough to drive. Its been a great truck, very fun to own. Only has 93k on it so it will be around for a long time to come!

Hi everyone. Got an F-150 Heritage, low miles (only 59,000). Everything works great, but found that I have holes in the muffler and exhaust pipe. I live in an emissions area, so it's gotta be repaired. Would like advice; intermediate pipe is in good shape, but muffler and exhaust pipe need to be replaced. Stainless steel muffler, catback single out, or up to the dual? Or, stick with a stock system? What about cherrybomb glasspacks? Forgive me if I sound uninformed, this will be my first exhaust system repair.

I owned this same body in high school and wish I never got rid of it. My truck body is straight with very few blemishes. Over all I am very happy with it.

I am looking at trying to repaint my factory wheels until it's in the budget to the new wheels I want.

I have seen a couple of youtube videos on how to prep the wheels for paint. Is there a video that anyone thinks is a better procedure than the others?

I have the gray factory steel wheels. Looking at just painting them black with chrome replacement center caps. Which is better, black wheel paint, or plasti-dip? Keep in mind I only know of plasti-dip what I see on the discusssion pages.

Sorry for the long message, thanks for the insight and help. Make it a great day!

Help! Recently, when it rains, the battery goes dead... Did some diagnostics... Rains, blower motor can turn on, chirp alert for passengers air bag chirps, the dash has relays that click... Seems if I shake truck or touch steering column it can stop or get worse! Jump start and it will randomly try to engage the starter while it's running! Nobody in the cab! Let it sit 1 to 3 days, charge battery... No problem... This just started a few weeks ago. We have had rain every 2 to 4 days all summer! This started about 5 weeks ago... Any ideas? I tried pulling fuses 2 and shut off the air bag and turned it on... Still the battery dies only when it rains....

Alright guys so I've been debating on this for a long time troubleshooting and repairing things but it's getting to the point where it's hard to drive my truck without it frustrating me. Basically it handles very poorly going down the road. Only 144000 miles I've replaced the sway bar bushings and end links recently, new shocks with the load assist ones in the rear, upper ball joints and control arm this past winter, and tie road ends about a year ago. No shop can see anything wrong but I know it used to handle a lot better. Also the steering wheel is getting some play but they say it's not bad. Idk what to believe from the shops though anymore driving me nuts haha any suggestions?

I'll be at a stop and when I hit the gas to go my rpms will rise and truck will rev up for a couple seconds and then the wheels finally catch and truck will go. And then cruising at about 20 mph today rpms started to rise but no power was being put out, truck was just rolling then finally caught up and started driving normal again. Does this sound like tranny issues, any similar incidents?

could me having a bad intake gasket cause coolant to be coming out my exhaust i have a 4.6L no coolant in my oil and no coolant on my plugs i have noticed that my RPM's is fluctuating about 200 RPM's when stopped and at normal operating temperature and my check engine light is throwing a misfire code it runs a little rough when cold and acts like it has no power until warmed up and then runs like it's suppose to i was told by a 50 year Ford mechanic that these triton motors was hard on intake gaskets and that the intake gasket could be my problem and not my heads any help ? And after running Sea-foam through my intake i started using more coolant

Hey guys so been a month or so since I have given a update on the expedition issues. Well rpm are still erratic and jump as well as the revving to over 2k on startup. But I did a smoke test with my dad today only to discover the Egor valve has a leak. What's even more weird is the throttle body appears to be leaking itself as well.... Really got in and looked close both of us, I'm assuming these would act the same as a normal vacuum leak and are what's causing the jumping, could it also cause my p1450 code about the evap. System? And how could the throttle body be leaking? All 4 screws where tight? Thoughts?

Trying something new. I've always used Mobil 1 and wix filters. The Extended Performance and the XP filters are a new thing for me. I do a lot of dusty road driving and my oil is dark after 5k miles. Interested to see how it works.

I've also had people tell me that Lucas is a waste of money or that it's "snake oil". I've used it the last 6 oil changes or so. My truck is an '04 heritage with 288k miles. It HAD a rear main seal leak, had a little bit of valve train noise (possibly a weak lifter) and lost about 1qt of oil between oil changes. That has pretty much went away since I've been using it. It costs about $16 a bottle but it's worth it.

I have an '04 heritage f150 with the 4.2 v6 w/ at. I bought it brand new, and at 280k miles I'm looking at having the motor redone, maybe even the auto trans.. Anybody here done any mods on the motor? Is anything available to make a substantial difference in motor performance? Before the jokes start, trust me, there's nothing I haven't already heard. So, don't bother. Hey, I own the truck, and don't want to buy/trade for anything else. It's been a good rig and don't have any interest in changing. Any advice and/or opinion on the motor or trans upgrades??

Hey guys still having rough idle after about 2 grand into my car from mechanics who can't seem to find out what's causing it. Haven't had a ses light come on since it first started about 3 months ago but idle still jumps and scares me. The code it had was initially the p1450 unable to bleed up fuel tank code. The first shop I took it to cleaned out the vent control solenoid said it was clogged with dirt and left it at that. I have also had the boots and plugs all replaced and have had a upper intake cleaning (cleaned throttle body etc) what do I check for or do next? CX ant really throw much more money Into it. I want to try to have the car idle fine and have it fixed by tomorrow I was supposed to take my kids on a family trip a few months back and promised them one this week if I can get it fixed. Don't want to let them down again. -tia (here's a video of how much the idle jumps and how often when it's bad)

Idk what to do anymore I have had my expedition in 3 different shops none of which have fixed the jumping idle. And it's getting loud now when it does it it's embarrassing only does it when stopped i have replaced battery alternator both went out today had system checked. Had one shop clean out fuel evap lines and canister, another shop said my ecu was out and never called me. And the last one cleaned out my whole throttle, and induction system and replaced all plugs. And lastly I replaced the IAC valve and it's still acting erratically. Is it hopeless at this point? What am I missing .... I would think if it was the coils or maf sensor itself one of the three shops would of found it.... 02 4.6l Eddie Bauer 153,000 miles

Mods are Magnaflow stainless muffler with dual 3" tailpipes, Rhino liner and Ziebart undercoating that was done the day after he bought her new in Sept 2004. The other mods that have been done over the years are the GOTS mod, K&N filter, rear Helwig 2500# progressive load springs, Helwig heavy duty rear sway bar, drilled and slotted rotors on all 4 corners with ceramic pads and a Kenwood double DIN stereo. Its been used for everything from hauling, towing, pulling stumps, hunting and fishing. You know, normal truck stuff. His truck's big claim to fame was when he moved from TX to NC with trailer and a bed full. It weighed in at a little over 14K and cruised at 70mph for the entire trip smooth as silk.

I want to get the tranny beefed up and do whatever I need to do to make the torque lower for a 5.4. ( I'm planning on doing a 5.4 swap soon) but if for some reason I don't get around to it will that ( what ever I need to do? ) to lower the torque of the 5.4 show a major noticeable difference with the 4.6 ? I just don't want to get it rebuilt then buy the 5.4 and send it out again. I'd rather be a one time thing. Thanks for the help.

I know it's not a "real" Saleen F-150 but I built this truck from the ground up with my dream in mind. It's a 4.6 5 speed stick. I want to sell it but am asking what you guys think it's worth. The tranny, the 8.8 rear has new guts. The tires and brakes have about 5,000 miles on them. I maintain the the truck meticulously. Even though the motor has 258,000 miles on it, it has never let me down. If you have questions or need info, please feel free to ask. Thank you for the ad.

I just havnt had a chance to look into it a lot but could probably find the problem but you guys may be able to lead me straight to it. So tonight I'm sitting in a parking lot listening to music and it just shut off. Here it was my amp died. Well my amp is a Rockford Fosgate 600 5 channel. It runs all four door speakers and the sub which is why I had no sound but the head unit was still on. Everything is still plugged in. So my first guess was I blew a fuss on the main power wire to the battery. Nothing. That's perfectly fine. There's only 1 or 2 power wires going to it. The main one from the battery. The main ground one and then a small one that goes to the head unit. None of the lights are on on it or anything. And there's no on off switch where it could of got bumped. My screwed to my floor but never has anything but a sub next to it. And never gets anything on top of it so it doesn't over heat. I've had it for about a year now. If you guys have any idea please let me know. I'll check into it more tomorrow or Monday if not. Thanks !

A ranch hand style front bumper replacement

3" lift kit and leveling kit

And have the back set up to carry my german shepherd comfortably.

Don't know if it's a loose wire or what but it's not working. Im going to check into it this weekend. If it's not a loose wires and it's just screwed I'm gonna do one of two things which is where I need you opinions! No one has ever done this ( that I know of and if someone had or has seen a pic of it please post ) with this style truck. Putting the color changing ring around the whole outside of the headlight she'll and removing the halo ? What do you guys think ? I thought it would be sweet but as I look at the headlights I don't know if that will be weird. It's hard for me to picture that in my head, or should I just leave them as the halo rings ? All opinions are welcomed and if anyone can like edit one of this pictures to kinda show what it would look like with the rings all the way around that would be awesome !

I can ship but you'll have to pay for it. I have the stock air intake with a K&N filter. End is cut to kinda give it the cold air intake but you can always just buy a new end cap. I have a set of halo headlights and stock headlights and markers. I have an aluminum hood ( just the stock one). If anyone's interested in any of it just leave a comment or call or text me 740-827-0944. Make me an offer. I will work on the prices. I just want it out of my garage. Thanks !

So, it appears that my clear coat is failing. Got a painter friend of mine to take a look. Told me I'd be looking at about 3 to 4 thousand. Mainly because it'd have to be stripped sanded primed, sanded again, then repainted and cleared. But, considering that a new truck I'd be looking at 35k or more with something with less options, and probably a lower package 3 or 4 thousand really doesn’t sound too bad lol.

Thinking about changing up the paint though. Still like the two tone, but thinking about going with grey instead of the green/blue.

It looks like once again the truck is going to cost me enough to not let me do what I want. It looks like I have to put a motor in it. I'm selling a brand new set of 18" Lightning wheels that I bought from Ford Motorsport (when it was still called that) M-1007-L189 is the part number and also have the chrome lug nuts to go with them. These rims re manufactured are going on eBay for $350 each. I'm looking for $300 each if I can find enough people to split up the set or $1200 for the set with the lugs.
