Evening everyone

Evening everyone...

Engine advice needed:

persistent coolant problem, initially seen through fans not pumping hot air chased by a rapid rise in temp and near overheating - after flushing the system twice and reloading coolant every two weeks for a month, leak somewhere... back to garage, they've added sealant within the system and although the engine isn't overheating now( as it has been for a while), but in low gears (40mph ish) the temp gauge rises quickly stops at 2/3, higher gears 60mph+ it settles.

Anyone experienced this? My van has had oil problems, coolant problems and I've not even had it for 6months - don't want to end up with an engine rebuild (quoted £1300)... advice welcome!

Hi we have been Bongo owners. of Happy an N reg from Ian Taylor of Stoke

Hi - we have been Bongo owners (of Happy an N reg from Ian Taylor of Stoke) for 2 years now and it is nigh on the best decision we ever made! We keep venturing further afield and our latest plan is to head to the Isle of Mull from Warrington in August. We have two young boys (6 and 4) and the majority of the family are fair-skinned. We would like to stop for a 2 night break somewhere on the way up and were contemplating Loch Lomond, but the campsite options seem somewhat uninspiring and the midge situation is also putting us off. We are fairly hardy and don't need electric hookup. Has anyone got a secret campsite they could let us in on that might suit our needs?! Thanks in advance....

Spurn Point, East yorks this weekend the view from the Bongo over towards Spurn.

It was very wet and windy but a brilliant first weekend in the Van we couldn't use our new awning due to the wind.

We had a brilliant time, the site was nice but water logged due to the weather, one toilet and a crappy shower but for £15 Including electric was worth it and the owners were lovely.

I'm not saying the site was bad it just needed improvement on the toilet and shower block.

I spent quite a lot of my childhood at Sandy beaches site, which was the ex Goodwin battery most of which has fallen in to the sea it was sad to see what remains of the place but it's still alive in my memories

Hello guys I got some questions, have you had experienced difficulty in starting your engine after a long drive? Mine it's a 1997 2.5D A/T. Just took in for a gas station shut off the engine, then when trying to turn it on it won't start up. My main battery was replaced August last year.

Then after an hour of waiting, I tried it again and the engine started. What would be the problem?

I cannot work this out. I thought that the wetness under my driver's mat/footwell was firstly coolant (turns out not) and then power steering fluid (again, not). It dried up for 3 days as I stopped driving with the heater on. I thought I solved the issue! However last night I left the area competely dry only to find it saturated this morning after having heavy rain last night. The van was not moved at all but the driver's footwell was soaked. The part by the pedals is dry but right in front of the seat and to the middle is saturated. Any ideas where this rain water is getting in?

Aha! After a week of working on the van, I have discovered that the water in my driver's footwell may indeed be weak coolant. Went down the route of power steering leak BUT it appears that as I am losing coolant (checked today after topping up yesterday) it is back to just under the minimum level overnight. Nothing in top part of the tank but it is in the bottom part. So I imagine that putting two and two together, the wetness is a leaking heater matrix , maybe? Ruled this out before as I thought coolant leajs were only on the passenger side but perhaps not. Would Radweld or a sealent like Holts work?

              Review. Maybe of interest.

I booked my bongo in originally for a passenger swivel seat. During the period leading up to the day I sent numerous emails that were always answered same day requesting information about this and that. Cut long story short I ended up having a full days work done including floor, seat, insulation, row of seats removed along with stops, table and rail and a 2 door cabinet. The quality of work is superb. Den is very friendly, patient, helpful and knowledgeable. We were dropped of in Walsall and got the train(4 every hour and just over £5 return for 2) into Birmingham and enjoyed our day in and around the bullring. On our return we were picked up and shown the work done, how to operate seat safely and if we were happy with everything. It was nearly dark so I only got to see the quality of work today and I'm mighty impressed. So to conclude the swivel seats are amazing and transform the interior. If you are thinking about having any work done to your bongo consider New Dawn Conversions. Easy to get to just off the M6.

Hello all. The van is making an awful grinding/scraping sound when the breaks are applied to bring it to a stop (brake discs/pads?). There is also a screeching sound when pulling off and sometimes when accelerating, as if a belt is slipping and then engaging after a short while.

Do these problems sound like things that could be adequately checked out by any decent garage? If so, can anyone recommend a good garage near Stroud/Gloucester area. I've had a look on mazdabongo.com and Bongo Fury sites but the nearest listed is in Bristol.

                Thanks in advance.

I had the pleasure of the drive home from Doncaster to Driffield in the Bongo and it was such a comfy relaxed drive my youngest daughter came as co-pilot as have what I call the 'Glasgow sweat' if I get lost (I got lost once in Glasgow with and came out in a cold sweat trying to get back on the road to Loch Lomond)

I have driven an automatic before so it wasn't to bad a first drive, a nice high sitting position and a good view of the road, even the engine sounds beastly.

The dashboard lights are so typically 90s and really bland compared to my Citroen DS3.

The headlights are poor. I presume there must be better bulbs available?

I took my 'boys' out for a ride in it and a long walk before I came on nights shifts. My boys are two Boxer dogs who seemed to like all the room in the back of the van. Here they are watching me with Hypno eyes..

Some help needed please, I've had my leisure battery in for about two years now, the only problems I've had are a failed relay, genuine Duritc in place now. And my old leisure battery died a dignified death about a year ago.

My issue is the new battery has been fine up until a couple of weeks ago, sometimes in the morning the leisure battery is dead, yet other mornings it holds its charge, I haven't changed anything or added anything, I've added photos of where I have earthed the battery and relay, could this cause a problem? As I've said it's been fine for ages.

Any help will be very appreciated.

Hi, looking for a bit of inspiration. Our Freda is unconverted, with a few mods such as a hook up for the campsites plus going to have a roof hatch conversion to a 3/4 bed for the kids.

I want to remove a set of seats and have a fold away/ removable table for day trips. But what I also want is a lot of storage, perhaps a bench seat or 2 side bench seats that ideally could use seat belts so we can still have 6 seated legally.

What to have a bit of room for carrying things like buggies/ carts for festivals etc. Am I asking to much? Any ideas/photos please??

Hi, just new to the group and have just bought a Ford Motor Caravan 1995. Trouble is as it's an import it doesn't have a model type on the V5 so I'm having difficulty getting insurance prices on comparison sites. Is it better to go through normal car sites or specific motor home sites. Any advice appreciated :)

Another little Bongo puzzle . Mine has a side conversion with a rock n roll bed. The hose from the sink which orginally showed about 4 inches of itself outside the van (to take away waste water) through a small hole near the rear offsid wheel arche of the van has vanished. I spent yesterday with a various bits of hose trying to push up up from underneath the van into the cupboard space to contect with the sink. I managed to push some wire up from outside underneath the van which appeared between the inside skin of the van and the plastic moulding but I couldnt pull the hose through as it seemed to jam just a few inches in as if there was a bend or something. It must be possible as the original hose took that route. I am not up for taking the cupbaord out as that means taking the bed out. All too much for me. Any thoughts?

Hi Folks. I have a quick question regarding fuses of my 1995 Bongo Friendee. Just the last few days I have had a few of the dreaded intermittent electrical kind! First my headlights would sometimes not come on ...until I traced that one to a dodgy contact behind the right headlamp. Later that day I lost rear washer ...? Then today I lost front screen washers ...? Also this morning my remote key fob became more and more reluctant to work when I pressed the button ...to unlock the doors and to disable the engine immobiliser. It finally stopped working altogether. This afternoon I changed the batteries in it as you do ...first thing you check/change (cleaned contacts inside fob also). I now have my van sitting immobilised on my drive (made all the more frustrating as my motorbike is trapped behind it in the garage! :( ...fortunately I can borrow the Mrs's car). Next thing I will look at is fuses. I have located a box under the steering wheel ...is this the only one? The fuses look tiny ...much smaller than normal blade fuses. I also need a fuse-box diagram ...the Japanese user manual is not much use lol! Does anyone here have a diagram they can possibly copy here? It would be a great help

                                  Seeking advice

I have been searching this page and posts on guidance for sealing / protecting the inside of the bongo...I. e. The internal bits down to the wheel arches.

I recall various waxy greasy sprays being discussed. I also found a post where Karl Chadwick had recommended a particular type of insulation.

My arches are starting to show problems but I want to protect from inside out then tackle outside.

AND apart from anything else I have just bought another one......really need my head looked at.

                                  Sorry for long post xx

Had a bit of an event of my own today on the way home from work when the alternator/power steering belt tensioner seized and snapped the belt. I was able to drive it home with the charging light on and no power steering. Wonder if anyone knows whether the bearings in the tensioner wheel can be replaced or it has to be the whole unit. Also which parts suppliers people prefer to use. I would prefer to use a specialist bongo supplier as I've got more chance of getting the right bits at the 1st attempt. Thanks

People on here suggested it might be the sensor that is faulty rather than problems with catalytic converter and to try a new sensor as a first step. Someone on here said he had changed his sensor himself and the sensor cost £15. So, got my gargae to quote me for a new sensor....they say they can only get one from Mazda Bongo at a cost of £243 quid, without labour! Anyone know where i might pick one up for a lot less than this please?

Can anyone give me some advice please??

So I eventually got around to starting up my newly purchased Freda today.

When I got it started (battery was dead) there seemed to be what looked like exhaust fumes coming from the expansion bottle.

I switched it off and filled with water.

As soon as I switched it on again the water in the bottle was bubbling mad?? (See video)

After 5 mins it got more steamy and after 10 mins even more steamier.

                                                Engine seemed quiet enough??

                                                Any thoughts??

                                                  Happy New Year 2017 everyone.

My Mazda Bongo Friendee 2.5TD (Year 2001) just got flat battery and got the 4.5yo battery replaced thinking that the battery was about time to replace but ended up it was faulty alternator.

Got the alternator service and repair but wasn't very happy with the voltage readings. The voltage readings are:-

                                                  1. Engine cruising mode at 2,500 rpm without Air Conditioning ON is 13.4V

                                                  2. Engine cruising mode at 2,500 rpm wit both front and rear Air Conditioning ON is 13.1V (a bit on the low side to me)

The part seller in my country told me that Ford Ranger and Mazda Bongo 2.5TD both using the same model alternator of 70A ampere rating (need to be imported and no refund if cannot fit into my car)

                                                  Please advise -

                                                  (i) Can the alternator (for Ford Ranger 2.5TD) be fitted into my Mazda Bongo?

(ii) Is the 70A Ampere rating the correct rating or it is a bit on the low side?

Well we had trouble-free ferry crossings with P&O over to France and back just before Xmas with our Bongo ...booked as a car. This next year we intend to get to know our '95 van more and more ...do her up bit, make improvements etc. One thing I wondered was whether she can run off biodiesel / and/or vegetable (chip) oil? Someone told me the engine could run off veg oil with no modification (!). Not brave enough to try that though

Can anybody give me the main reasons what the glow plug flashing could be ? When mine comes on it doesn't seem to lose power or performance , I have had it in a Bongo specialist and he couldn't fine the problem . He read the codes and changed the switches but it still comes on .

So a couple of weeks ago (just after an easy MOT pass), the ride started feeling hard and bouncy. No knocking sounds at all, but particularly bouncy when cornering to the right at any sort of speed. First thought was a broken spring or leaking shock, but I can't see any sign of either, front or rear. I've got it booked in to the garage next week for a check, but has anybody else come across this? It has always had a very comfortable ride until now, so this is definitely something which has changed suddenly.

Here s today s stupid question — Mazda Bongo Friendee Ford Freda Owners Forum

                                                            Here's today's stupid question.

Trying to get front fogs to work. (I've never seen them on) Replaced bulbs and fuse. Nothing. So I'm pulling apart the dash. To see if the switch is connected.

                                                            And it is

But the rear fog is tapped into it. Which works.

There's another connector block the exact same size as the one plugged into the front fog socket.

                                                            Connect it - nothing.

                                                            What's this other block for?

                                                              Morning

                                                              Have a question

If I turn my middle seat to face the rear do I have to have seat belts. I only ask for an Mot point of view I'm not going to allow passengers to sit on it when im driving as I still have to rear fold down seats for that.

Tried Google and it's an very grey area.

                                                              Van is a 1995

                                                              Cheers

Hi All. Anyone got thoughts on this warning light? Been for 2 years or so. Garage says it's no issue as long as it's not flashing, and it's not. Service last week says it's the 02 something or other but it's not worth expense of investigating as van runs fine and has had no issues. What do you reckon?

Looked at the fuse guide on BF and they all seem to go through the 15A fuse in the X02 fuse box under the middle of the bonnet.

Changed the fuse, although it looked OK but it hasn't fixed the problem.

Do I need to fit them away from the bar, or do they only pick up vertically? I've got 4 sensors in the kit I've bought. Should I only fit 2 of them?

I'll need to fit an on/off switch for when I've got a trailer on. Nothing worse than the stress of reversing a trailer with loud beeping going on!
