Well, I learned something new yesterday...my mate Warren has been telling me for a long time that he has what he suspected as being an ex-Police Highway Patrol XC Hardtop that had been done up as an XC Cobra replica...however after he sent me the attached photos and I asked around, it became apparent that he had John Goss XC Cobra #005...apparently 15 John Goss XC Cobras were made and Warren has one of them....looks like his Hardtop started life as a Police Highway Patrol vehicle and was then turned into a JG Cobra...awesome...

McLeod Ford horn cars

McLeod Ford "horn" cars

Max McLeod owned a Ford dealership in Rockdale, New South Wales, a suburb of Sydney, and sponsored John Goss entered Falcons in the South Pacific Touring Series, ATCC and multiple Bathurst 1000 races. In addition to further modifications to Fords own John Goss Special, McLeod offered the "horn" pack to various Falcon models. These cars are known for their stand-out "strobe" stripes that were applied to the cars, these stripes were the same as used in the McLeod sponsored John Goss racing cars

I tracked down the owner of XC Cobra #040 today and we had a chat...this is the Cobra that had the roof cut into a Targa-Top before being painted Black...Andrew and Lorraine have had the car for 20-years since Lorraine bought it for $2,500 in the mid-1990's and it is in their garage at Greenbank (QLD)...Andrew has plans to restore it back to Cobra livery, but leave it as a Targa-Top...unfortunately it is no longer matching numbers as someone has replaced the 351 and 4-speed manual box with a 302 and C4 at some point in its early life...still good to know that it still exists in some form these days...

I was recently asked by one of my clients if they could purchase a car in their Self-Managed Superannuation Fund (SMSF). Trustees of SMSF’s are aware whilst the ATO does not prohibit a SMSF investing in collectables and artwork, they may be less sure of the rules concerning cars and motorcycles.

Consequently, I thought that it would be a good topic to elaborate on in this newsletter, in particular, trustees may have questions relating to the use and maintenance of motor vehicles and whether this breaks the rules governing personal use assets.

      These may include:

      Storage of the motor vehicle

Superannuation law prohibits motor vehicles from being stored in the ‘private residence’ of a member of a SMSF or of any related party of the fund. This includes areas such as the garage of a private home or other area that is considered a private dwelling.

However, there is an exception to this rule. According to the ATO, motor vehicles, as well as other personal use assets, are allowed to be stored in business premises owned by a related party of the fund. This does not extend to private residences, but rather business areas such as a purpose built storage facility, car park or garage that is part of a business.

Taking out a motor vehicle for a maintenance drive

Under current super legislation, the ATO maintains that a trustee cannot “drive the vehicle for any reason, including taking it for a maintenance drive.”

The regulations also extend to prohibiting restoration work to take place on the motor vehicle. However, the law does not prevent a person who is not a member of the SMSF or a related party to drive the vehicle for maintenance purposes.

Therefore to get it serviced, you can’t take it to your mechanic, they have to come to you!

Other restrictions for personal use assets may extend to motor vehicles as well:

•Collectibles such as motorcycles and cars must not be leased to any related party.

•SMSF trustees must ensure that the vehicle is insured in the name of the fund within 7 days of acquisition.

          Sad Stories

          Sad Stories.

I have a sad story that ended with my old girl XC sedan's death.

I had her for 8 years and over that time I worked on her all the time. I replaced everything. Dash, front end, rotors, breaks, diff to a 9", xflow to a 351C with C4 Transmission, all the interior and seat building her up to look like a 4 door replica Cobra & still had a long way to go. My gf at the time broke down with a flat battery. I didn't have leads but I had a truck battery. So I went out to help my gf. I put my battery in her car and the truck battery in mine. Was only meant to be a temp thing but I didn't rush to change the batteries back as everything was okay the way it was I THOUGHT. Well 2 weeks later I stopped in the middle of the city with smoke bellowing out under the dash. I quickly opened the bonnet and disconnected the battery and that's when I noticed the truck battery had shifted and was touching the Alternator and it had made a small hole and was spraying acid all over my wires. To get her home I connected the line to the starter and a wire directly from the battery to the dizzy. Cranked her over with a screw driver and followed my gf home as I have nothing working accept the engine and no idea what speed I was doing. Over 3 months I was working on her took the dash out and the harness was stuffed I had the take all the harness out. Shortly after we broke up and I had my car and a parts car both in her dads drive. I had no where to go and only had my XD while working on my XC. Her dad wanted both XC's gone out of his yard that week and I told him I can't move them yet. So he called the scrap yard without me knowing and had them both taken away. I arrived there as my baby was getting pressed down with the crane from the truck. I cried as it was to late to do anything, she was already damaged beyond repair. Her dad was a real ass hole and never liked me. I called the police and because my XC was 2 weeks out of rego the cops said there is nothing I can do as when a car is out of rego it is no longer classed as belonging to someone. Back in the day I never had a camera so I never took any photo's of her. I met a bloke online who can draw cars Wayne Sotogi who drew my old girl from my memory of her. The drawing cost $215 but to have her come to life again on canvas is priceless to me. How or why I named my old girl Justine is another story. I still miss her everyday. My first love.

Thought I would share some images from a workshop tour for 90 mins yesterday of the Shelby Museum in Las Vegas. This guy left an amazing legacy not only to the automotive industry but also in saving literally 100's of children's lives through the Shelby Foundation.

You can buy a brand new, hand made exact replica of a 1965 AC Cobra today for $160k US rolling chassis ($90k for Fibreglass) and then they ship to a Ford Dealer of your choice to finish the job for around another $50 to $70k US, then there are the Daytona Coupes, Mustangs, and GT 40's, Raptor 4x4's.......

Awesome couple of hours and some really rare cars there as they where having a Ford Motor Co. function on site last night as part of SEMA, I'm off there today.

These are all the Cobra related images, we post some others shortly, enjoy....I did.

                Dear Members

                Dear Members,

I hope this correspondence finds you all well…?

It’s difficult to believe that we are nearly in November and 2016 is nearly in the rear view mirror….

I headed to Valla Beach last weekend with the Falcon GT Owners Club of QLD, leaving Friday and returning home on Sunday…I took my Hardtop and whilst we had some rain on the Friday night the weather was not as bad as forecast....a great weekend was had by all.

I have been asked by a couple of Club Members over the past couple of weeks to provide the locations pre-sanctioned by the Club so that our Members can take their cars on Club Registration (Special Interest Vehicles) on a cruise without fear of not being covered…to the best of my knowledge these locations are; Club sanctioned locations include: Munchies - Acacia Ridge, Old Skool Meet - Caboolture, Classic Car Meet – Yamanto, Classic Car Meet – Toowoomba, Masters – Coomera, Masters – Northlakes, Mount Tamborine, Glasshouse Mountains, Maleny, Montville, Old Petrie Town, Mooloolaba Esplanade, Gold Coast Spit and all normal Service Work travel within the allowable zone…I hope this helps clarify the locations.

I spoke with the Department of Transport last week on behalf of one our Club Members as he was charged $500/annum for Club Rego for his Landau, whereas the last time I paid my registration it was around $185…the Department of Transport representative told me that the SIV registration had increased to $211/annum and therefore the person from the Department of Transport that processed this particular application for SIV registration must have forgotten to change the CTP to reflect SIV registration….that turned out to be the case and upon application our Club Member received a $300 refund as a result….hopefully nobody else has been caught out by this matter.

The QLD Government recently announced that weddings, proms, etc. can be undertaken by people with SIV registration where the passenger to the event is not a direct family member as long as the event is sanctioned by the Club that the person is a financial member of and also the person must receive no financial compensation whatsoever….this is certainly a change of heart by the Government as prior to this announcement it has always been my understanding that it had to be a direct family member and that large fines would be imposed if you were caught. I could certainly understand the QLD Government taking this position as they had to take steps to protect the people who paid a large fee every year to be a registered business in this regard….the cars of the legitimate business also had to be rigorously inspected on a quarterly basis every year….however the legalisation of Uber in QLD may have softened the Government’s approach towards this matter. If you are undertaking these activities in a vehicle that is on SIV registration and you are a financial member of our Club please let me know so that we can sanction the wedding / formal accordingly…?

                  Rod Henderson asked me to share this for him;

Have been asked to see if anyone would like to own this beautiful '67 XR Ford Mercury Cougar RHD coupe? It is owned by a friend of my Dad's, the chap has advanced motor neurone disease and has come to a point where he has to sell it to get his affairs in order. I do not know much about it suffice to say it has had 7 years work on it and is fully restored, I believe they would sell it for mid 30's?....but have no idea what these things are worth? I dont have any further details but can put any genuine interest in touch with the guy. Vehicle is located in Brisbane.

For Sale: I've got a pair of genuine XC Cobra seats that I've just pulled out of a GT. The frames and mechs are in good condition but trim is worn. XC hardtop seats are particularly hard to find.

I don't mind retrimming these and having them done to XB GT trim but if they help someone else complete and XC (Cobra or other) then cool I'll let them go for $650.

I have already contacted the owner of the Cobra they came out of many many years ago however he has already replaced them so does not need another pair.

Rod has designed the shirts with "ALL FORD ENTHUSIASTS" in capital letters on the collar, plus some Ford models listed on the sleeves.

Please let us know what sizes, how many you would like to order and whether you want the male or female design...?

All Ford Day 2016 South East QLD is fast approaching as it is on at Willowbank Raceway on the 17th July. This year I want to ensure that enough room is allocated for our Club members so we can park together...I have asked if our XA to XC Hardtop members can be parked at one end of Hardtop Alley as we were in 2015, but with more room allocated for our non-Hardtop members in our allocated area. To allow this to happen we will need to have numbers, please let me know if you are coming and what car you will be bringing...? We will also be holding our AGM on the day with all Club positions up for grabs.
